There is so much going on, always. like always. Google calendars are full and the to-do list is never ending. But we cannot keep business from meeting with people, from sitting face to face and actually being with people. I often think we make hosting so much of a hassle that it never happens—we end up sabotaging ourselves.
Sooo maybe this is my type b personality coming out to shine, but i have adopted a new habit called invite first, plan later. So much of the battle is just the thing you put off over and over again, so to combat that, you make the first move and you stick to it. You tell people dinner is happening, and then you figure out dinner. Believe me, I am the queen of doing too much. Why do I feel the need to completely create a new lampshade from scratch instead of just vacuuming the floor when people are coming over in 15 minutes? I. don’t. know. Probably because i’m insane.
But do it—send the invite. It’s so worth it. We are meant to be connected to people. We are meant to know the lives of the people we surround ourselves with. So fill your table and start eating.
But first, finish this post—I’ve got some tips to hopefully make this a little easier.
Let me take the mental load, you do the work.

This might seem like a lot, but trust me, it creates a flow of the night that feels easy and effortless. When guests arrive, have something laid out for them to nibble on. This takes away any prior stress about getting the meal done at the perfect second—so guests aren’t waiting around, but the food also doesn’t get cold. It also gives you space to finish final touches on the meal while still being present, talking, and doing something with your hands.
It also gives you the opportunity to give guests something to do if things feel a little awkward or you need help with small things. Once everything is ready, you can either plate the meal or let guests serve themselves. Bring the appetizer section into the meal, allowing people to take what they want or skip what they don’t. This is often where picky eaters naturally opt out without pressure or leaving food on their plate.
The fun drink is what makes the night feel special—a themed mocktail that pairs with the meal is always a nice touch and immediately sets the tone for the evening.
And finishing with dessert is perfect. Once you’re done eating and the table is cleared, it becomes a natural transition point to move people into a living room or sitting area. Then you can serve dessert in a less formal, more relaxed way once everyone has been talking and is more comfortable.
